PISA: A trip out to Pisa, to fulfil the goal I had from 5 years ago: to climb the Leaning Tower, which was closed last time for structural works. I walked around the corner and saw a bit of scaffolding on it, no line at the bottom, and no people climbing on it, and freaked out thinking it was closed again!! Luckily though the scaffolding is there just for minor cleaning works, they have an organised system to let people on it meaning no queues, and I was just going blind because there were people on the top of it! Phew!
The circular baptistry
From the second floor of the baptistry
A stained glass window inside, which threw lots of colours onto the floor
This woman was singing up towards the roof, because the acoustics in the baptistry are amazing. Her voice reflected back and the sound was incredible
Not sure why there was a skull and crossbones on the floor of a baptistry
The amount of people doing the posed photo where they are holding up the tower is completely comical, I was laughing so hard because every single person standing in front of it was doing the pose, and they all looked so funny! Like clones, doing a pose because they think they have to. Be original people!
The Romanesque cathedral
Closeup of the cathedral's facade
One of the painted cupolas inside the cathedral, I love the perspective on it
The Palazzo dei Cavalieri in the piazza of the same name, named for the Knights of Santo Stefano, founded by Cosimo de' Medici
The Palazzo dell'Orologio (orologio means clock), which stands on the site where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, his sons and his grandsons were starved to death because they were suspected of helping the Genovese enemy at the Battle of Meloria. Lovely!
After my panic attack that it was shut, I bought my ticket and got my allotted time to climb up to the top: 7pm. So a few hours of killing time in Pisa later, up I went! So excited!!
The stairs on the way up; it's the most bizarre sensation because the lean is really apparent, you feel like you're drunk walking up the steps!
About half way up
The view down onto the cathedral and the lawns below
Me with one of the bells almost at the top of the tower
Looking down from the top at the 6 bells
The view from the top
Pisa's football stadium

Looking very pleased with myself!
A shot of the Arno river as I headed home
