ROME 6: My last day in Rome before heading to Perugia. First, I went back to the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II to climb up the steps and see inside. I keep saying this but despite its unpopularity and the fact that it's completely over the top, it's still very impressive. The statue of Vittorio Emanuele II on his horse; gigantic!
A carabinieri standing guard on the monument. Trying to look tough. I'm scared, really scared Columns on the upper part of the monument The view over part of Rome; I love how the buildings are all similar colours
It's hard to see from the photo but these are pieces of shrapnel, bullets, grenades and other military paraphernalia that were turned into jewellery and other quite beautiful objects by the soldiers who came back from the war. I like the little plane in the bottom left hand corner, its body is made out of a bullet and it has beautiful engraving on it. Strange how such a horrible object could be turned into something lovely Inside the Pantheon, which was also closed the day I first went there

The domed roof of the Pantheon; apparently even though there is a hole in the roof, the rain never gets inside on the floor, because it's designed so that it runs over the edge of the hole and along the face of the dome into special drains. Clever
